A Downsizers Guide To Finding The Rightsize
Arriving at the decision to downsize your current home can be a daunting one. Firstly, you are deciding to embark on a new chapter, secondly, it’s...
A home doesn’t need to be huge to feel spacious. And you don’t need to be Martha Stewart to add some clever organisation tricks to your home. You can make the most of the space you have with a couple of handy storage hacks – some small, some big –.
From the kitchen and bathroom to the bedroom and laundry, here are some clever things you can do to introduce more storage options throughout your home.
Our best tip regarding storage solutions is to be smart during the furniture selection and purchase process. This may be as simple as choosing a coffee and side table with additional shelving or drawer storage as opposed to a table that has only the top for accessorising. You could also opt for a storage ottoman in replacement of a coffee table or entry bench to store shoes, magazines, blankets… really anything that isn’t attractive to the eye and that could look cluttered in a small space.
Beds take up the most space in the bedroom so storing items under the bed is a great way to create additional storage. You can opt for a bed frame that is purposely built with storage such as a gas lift bed frame, an ottoman bed frame or a bed frame with drawers. An alternative is a bed frame with tall legs or to get a bed riser to place under your existing bed frame so, there is enough clearance to fit under bed storage containers.

If you have a narrow room or your bed is placed on a narrow wall, then you might not have enough space on either side of your bed to place bedside tables.
A great alternative to a bedside table is to install a small floating shelf on either side of your bed. You can find shelves of all different sizes or even make your own shelf so it will fit perfectly in your space. Here is a great range to view or you can pop down to your local Bunnings and get a piece of wood cut to size and paint it to the colour of your choice. Shelves next to the bed are the perfect size to store small items such as your current favourite book, a pair of glasses and a glass of water.
If your apartment only comes with a single storage cupboard, you want to make the most of it by organising all your items using baskets and containers. Organising and placing all your items into designated baskets will keep things neat and tidy. It will also help you to maximise the entire area of your cupboard. If you have a deep cupboard, you want to find long containers so you can use the entire depth of the cupboard rather than just the front of the shelves.
Go up, not out! Shelves don’t need to take up long expanses of horizontal space to be useful. Especially in small spaces, a short length of shelves can efficiently meet your storage needs. A narrow stretch of wall with open shelves provides easy-access storage for dishes, cooking essentials, or laundry items that are used most often.

Some of your hobbies could become wall decals… Guitars, bikes, mugs? In this modern day, you can get away with hanging them on a wall and calling it art. It also makes them easily accessible if you do use them on a regular basis.
You know those shoe holders you hang behind the door? The ones with pockets for you to fit your shoes? You can most definitely use those for more than just shoes!
These inexpensive storage options can be hung behind every door for anything you can imagine: shirts, makeup items, pens and pencils and much more.
